FHA/VA Water Test

The drinking water test is designed for FHA/ VA/ HYD/ USDA loans and homes with private water wells. It is not suitable for municipal water sources. The test includes: Bacteria (E. coli, Total Coliforms), Lead, Nitrites and Nitrates

Total coliform (TC) bacteria are common in the environment (such as in soil) and the intestines of animals and are generally not harmful, but can cause diarrhea and stomach issues. Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria are found in greater quantities than total coliform in animal fecal matter. If E. coli is detected along with TC in drinking water, there is strong evidence that sewage is present; therefore, a greater potential for pathogenic organisms exists which can cause more serious diseases which may have symptoms of diarrhea, which may range from mild and watery to severe and bloody stomach cramping, pain or tenderness, nausea and vomiting. It can also lead to other diseases with immune compromised individuals and the elderly.

Lead can affect multiple systems and is particularly harmful to young children and women of child-bearing age. Lead is distributed to the brain, liver, kidney and bones. It is stored in the teeth and bones, where it can accumulate over time.

Nitrites and Nitrates Nitrates are relatively inert, which means they’re stable and unlikely to change and cause harm. However, bacteria in the mouth or enzymes in the body can convert them into nitrites, and these may be harmful. In turn, nitrites can either turn into: nitric oxide, which is beneficial for the body; or nitrosamines, which can be harmful
